Congratulations on acquiring your home. Regardless of the age of the house, there is always something that needs to be done, and if you want to do as much as possible instruments is a prerequisite.
One of the first things I suggest you buy a book on home repairs. Home Depot has one, has Lowe's, and I know that the bookstore has a wide range. These books are in the collection of information, both for repairs or for the configuration of inestimable value. It is normal for all bases, and give you information about large objects, you'll probably get a professional repair person. I would suggest one that always has lots of illustrations, since these can be very helpful. You will learn how to fix a toilet to replace an electrical switch, and so many other things!
In more and you could be equipped with tools, do I have a few suggestions. You can go and spend a lot of tool box filled with hundreds of pieces, but I would pass: Start with some simple tools such as a hammer, a good set of screwdrivers, a wrench or a (smaller one and larger), pliers, a drill, a tape measure, trowel, safety glasses and a knife. You can get a cheap tool box as well.
Consider some other things that are a step ladder, drop cloth, tape, paint brushes, extension cords, a pair of work gloves and a flashlight (at least).
With the purchase of tools, you can use the cheapest or most expensive. My philosophy is expensive if you are not sure how much you want to be, must have tools you can not. You spend less and if you click with the tool all the time, then you can see to replace them, and at the point where you get a better idea of what you want. I can always go on about the tools that you might want, but I think it's best to start with the basics and add-on as you go.
If you have any large projects in mind, you do not need to buy expensive tools to get started. Many hardware stores rent tools you need, such as a circular saw, tile saw, hammer drill, circular saws and pneumatic nail guns and compressors. You will save a lot of money to rent these items if you do not think you will ever use them again. And you will be less clutter in your garage or program area.
Good luck!
